Why We Need Change Now?

Tiffany Mock-Goeman

I have spent most of my professional life working with local, state and federal government agencies to identify solutions to the larger problems that Sacramento and other Northern California communities struggle with- particularly housing, homelessness, healthcare and mental health/substance use. I know how County departments work and unfortunately-don't work.  I have seen hardworking and committed department staff collaboratively work toward thoughtful responses to problems and crises only to have their executive leadership balk at the chance because it might make waves or create disruption between departments.

So, when I read an interview with Susan Peters, my own District Supervisor, last year in which she talked about the County's new plan to end homelessness (its 3rd during her four terms) as if the problem was new and that she was still learning about the problem, I knew then that I was represented by someone who did not think that actually addressing the problem with real solutions was her responsibility.

As I have gone around District 3, visiting with my neighbors living all over the unincorporated areas of Arden Arcade, Foothill Farms, North Highlands, Carmichael and Fair Oaks, over and over I have heard your concerns about the same issues:

  • Homelessness and the marginally housed,

  • Housing-access & affordability,

  • Commercial blight,

  • Crime, and

  • of course, Potholes.

Now, for the first time in 16 years, we have an opportunity to elect a Supervisor who is committed to bringing change in this district, its residents and the issues that matter to us. We need a leader at the County level who has a vision for our district, plans that can get us headed in the right direction and is
committed to active engagement and change, both incremental and monumental.

We can't afford to elect more of the same. Won't you join your voice with mine for change?
